Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) has launched a practical guide for the seafood industry to reduce and mitigate lost fishing gear and marine litter.
Ghost gear refers to any fishing equipment or fishing-related litter that has been abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded; also referred to as ‘derelict fishing gear’ and/or ‘fishing litter’. To combat ghost gear the Best Practices and Inform Policies working group, in conjunction with Poseidon Aquatic Resource Management Ltd, developed the Best Practice Framework for the Management of Fishing Gear (BPF).
The BPF provides all fishery stakeholders, from fishermen to port operators, with practical guidance to decrease the abundance and effects of ghost gear within their respective industries.
